The Clarkson Sheridan Soccer Club (CSSC) has a responsibility to all of the players, coaches, officials, volunteers, and club staff in our program to provide a safe and healthy soccer experience. In order to establish a secure positive environment, the Club adheres to the policy described here.
In providing high quality sports activities for our youth, our volunteers are frequently placed in positions requiring trust. Those volunteers deemed to be in positions of highest risk are required to undergo a screening process based on their duties as determined by the Club. The process is described here.
A Selection Committee has been established to interview applicants for positions on competitive and house league team staffs. All coaches must submit an application with related experience and references. All references will be conducted.
The first principle of screening is risk management. This involves looking at the possibilities of loss or injury that might arise in programs, activities and services and taking steps to minimize, prevent or eliminate them altogether. This includes CSSC's obligation to take all reasonable measures to care for and protect their participants from harm. The need to screen an applicant is dictated by the nature of the position and its inherent level of risk. When determining risk, we consider such factors as the participant, the environment, the nature of the activity, the level of supervision, and the nature of the relationship.
The OSA deems all competitive team officials to be in a high risk position. This requires an application form with references, an interview with the selection committee, personal reference checks, a police criminal records check, and an evaluation by the club. This includes all rep team officials, as well as all star and select team officials.
A medium risk position is defined as recreational house league officials from tyke up to under 16 boys and girls. These officials are required to submit an application with references and a police records check. Reference checks will be conducted at the Club's discretion.
The CSSC screening policy will be reviewed with all coaches during the annual coaches orientation meetings.
All information received through the application forms and police records checks will betreated as highly confidential and stored in a secure area. Access will be need-to-know only and limited to Club officers.
The Clarkson Sheridan Soccer Club adopts the Ontario Soccer Association's Volunteer Screening Handbook as part of its screening policy. Members can view the entire handbook at the OSA website (click on the Volunteer Screening and Harassment section).
